Bunnings has warned its suppliers to prepare for a major expansion after the hardware behemoth swooped on 11 former Masters Home Improvement stores across Australia and announced plans to open nine new stores across NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
The transformation of the Masters sites has piqued the interest of the competition watchdog but only in relation to the four Masters sites that represent new trading locations for the Bunnings network.
Seven of the Masters stores slated for transformation are in suburbs where there is already a Bunnings warehouse and the chain is shutting these stores and moving into the revamped Masters premises.
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims said there were only a handful of new stores, most of them were "swaps" from current Bunnings stores.Outdoor Entertainment Area Lighting Ideas - Bunnings Warehouse

Bunnings Warehouse announced last year it was coming to Gatton after it was approved by Lockyer Valley Regional Council. A council spokesperson said planning approval was given to Bunnings in December at Eastern Dr, Gatton. The new Bunnings location sits just outside of the town, just a couple of minutes from the CBD. However, since the project was approved, no work has started at the site which would be the town's only hardware store after the closure of Mitre 10 early last year.
The spokesperson said the hardware giant had four years to commence construction, which could push the start date to December at the latest. Bunnings property general manager Andrew Marks could not confirm a start date, but did confirm the approval for the new Bunnings store. The new Gatton Bunnings comes after the current construction of a second warehouse for Toowoomba and one for Dalby, which has yet to begin construction, but is set to be finished by the end of the year.

And the more of that revenue Bunnings get to trouser through digital efficiency the bigger advantage it extracts. Scott told iTnews there was no specific online target specified for Bunnings in terms of transactions; rather the strategy would be led by what worked best for customers.
Some of the best Bunnings store customers were also online customers he said. The core line Scott is pushing is that the data and digital capability can deliver a kind of network effect for Wesfarmers, with lifts in capacity utilisation across its industrials business he said. Bunnings revealed the full throttle expansion of its digital rollout to go live by Christmas in June, six months earlier than initially indicated. The digital rollout is especially popular with tradies and businesses because it speeds up turnaround times and guarantees product availability.
At the same time it revealed aroundtradies were now using its PowerPass app and trade credit facility that allows ordering and also disintermediates credit card payments, allowing Bunnings to convert what would have been a cost into an earner.
Bunnings CEO Michael Schneider said on Tuesday PowerPass membership was growing at around 10 percent to 15 percent a year, with around downloads a week.
Scott said PowerPass was already being combined with Wesfarmers data analytics capability to provide enhanced offers to trade customers. It is understood that the analytics component of the online platform is also being geared towards augmenting online sales by grouping baskets — or ute loads — by linking associated products commonly co-purchased. For example top coat plaster is commonly used with plasterboard; driver and drill bits associated with fixings like screws; and solvents and cleaning agents associated with paint.
On the Wesfarmers analyst call, Bunnings CEO Michael Schneider said the click and collect rollout was going to plan to land in time for Christmas trade. Schneider also pointed to the addition of services from Bunnings, which it promotes heavily online as well as in store.
The standout Bunnings-as-a-Service categories — which are provided by licensed tradies that are also its customers — have been toilet installation and barbeque assembly, Schneider said.
